Interview with Anne Marie Citro
1)What made you start writing?
This is going to sound bizarre but have you ever looked at a couple and wondered what it is like to be them? What brought them to this place in time.?Well I wondered that all the time and then I come up with these great stories in my head. I am lucky enough to travel and I write very detail accounts of our trips. So I blended the two together and started writing, love stories in beautiful locations I have visited.
2) What is your favorite genre to read? to write?
I am totally a romance junky to read and write. I love a happy ending. I believe in love; I have been married for thirty years and I adore my husband. But you don’t fall in love and that’s it. You have to work every day for it. Some days I want to hug him, the next I want to kill him.
3) What author inspired you most?
Diana Gabaldon the author of Outlander is by far the best writer I have had the privilege to read. She made me fall in love with a country, and believe a fictional character was real. I still say Jamie is the only man I would leave my husband for.
4) What is the best advice you can give to an aspiring writer?
Writing the book is the easiest part. The logistics of producing it sucks the life out of you. The most important thing you can do is find editors you trust and respect. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because when you get your first edit back your heart sinks and you question what you are doing. Be strong take a deep breath and mull it over for twenty-four hours. They know their job, trust them.
5) What has been the best way you’ve found to promote your book?
Good question, but I don’t have a good answer because I am still trying to figure that out. I am a grain of sand in a beach and trying to get noticed. It is hard with millions of books out there. If you have any suggestions please send them to me.
6) If you couldn’t write, what would you do?
That’s easy, because when I am not writing I work with special needs teenagers. I work in a school for kids with serve disabilities. The students have to have a minimum of three diagnoses to be in the school. These kids are unpredictable and amazing. It is a physically and mentally demanding job, but I have learned more about life and living from these kids than anyone else. It is one of my greatest pleasures in life.
7) How long does it typically take you to write a book?
My first book took me a year to write. Now that I am on a sabbatical from my job it takes about four months. Working eight hours a day, six days a week.
8) What is your favorite point of view and why?
My favorite point of view and the thing I tried to teach my four sons is you get one life, try everything you can. You don’t have to be a master at any of them, but if it interests you, try it. I am extremely shy so it took me years to figure out I could try anything once, decide if I like it and want to do it again. I wished I had learned that years ago.
9) What do you like to do in your spare time?
Art and travelling plain and simple. I love to paint oils, acrylics, pastels on canvas, boards, glass, material and rocks. I like sculpting wire, medal, wood. Wood burning wood, or leather. Jewelry making. I love spending my children’s inheritance and seeing the world.
10) What do you think would be the hardest genre for you to write and why?
Horror because I am terrified of the thought of ghosts. I have a really close friend who is a spiritual medium. She doesn’t do it for a living, it just who she is. She tries to respect my aversion but apparently someone from beyond is trying to reach me. I don’t want to know, because if I do that opens up all kinds of doors I not ready to answer. I am a total chicken and refuse to be alone in my house or my cottage.
